Small Town Fun
Lincoln Lake
If you're in search of an exhilarating adventure, Lincoln
Lake should be at the top of your list. This hidden gem has been gaining
widespread recognition, particularly for its growing rock climbing scene.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, Lincoln Lake offers a
range of climbs to suit all skill levels, and its popularity is soaring
nationwide.
For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, the
"Lake Trail Loop" offers a delightful hiking experience. This scenic
trail winds its way through the woods, takes you over the dam, and provides
numerous opportunities to soak in breathtaking views of the area. If mountain
biking is more your style, you're in luck! There are more than 7 miles of
fantastic biking trails that meander past caves, cliffs, and offer stunning views
of the lake.
For those seeking a water adventure, Lincoln Lake is
perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Since the lake is modest in size and does not allow motors, it is perfect for a peaceful and quiet afternoon outing. Just bought a kayak? Great! This is an excellent location to dip your toes in (metaphorically speaking) without concerns about heavy traffic or rough waters.
One of the standout features of Lincoln Lake is the
incredible support it receives from the local school community. The EAST
program plays a pivotal role by managing the lake's website, creating detailed
maps, and installing informative signage for both rock climbers and trail
enthusiasts. Additionally, the school hosts the Lincoln Youth Adventure Club,
which enables young adventurers to fully embrace the wonders of this local spot.

Historic
Cane Hill
Just a stone's throw away from Lincoln lies the enchanting
treasure that is Historic Cane Hill. Established in 1834, the Cane Hill School
holds the distinction of being not only the first formally organized school in
Northwest Arkansas but also the very first public library in the state. By
1852, it had evolved into Cane Hill College, making it one of Arkansas's
earliest institutions to offer four-year degrees.
In 2017, Historic Cane Hill embarked on an extensive
rehabilitation project for the school building, which now stands as a splendid
centerpiece in the community. The restoration efforts extend to several other
landmarks, each a must-see in its own right. Personally, my heart has a soft
spot for the McCarty House, as it was my grandmother's childhood home and now
stands beautifully restored.
In addition to these lovingly preserved structures, you can
explore the museum that houses a captivating collection, offering a glimpse
into the rich history of Cane Hill. Scenic walking trails wind through the
natural beauty that envelops the town, providing an ideal backdrop for
exploration.
A highlight of the calendar is the Cane Hill Festival, a
grand event held annually in September. This lively gathering boasts live
music, a showcase of local arts and crafts, captivating sorghum and molasses
demonstrations, and an array of other fun activities. It's an occasion not to
be missed!

Prairie
Grove Battlefield Park
One of the top spots for my weekday lunches is Prairie Grove
Battlefield Park. It offers numerous shaded parking spots and picnic tables,
creating an ideal setting for a peaceful and leisurely lunch break.
Additionally, a well-maintained paved walking trail is on hand for a post-lunch
stroll, adding to the park's benefits.
The park also includes a playground for little ones and convenient bathroom facilities. If
you find yourself with more than just a brief hour for lunch, don't miss the
opportunity to explore the park's historical buildings and museum, which
provide fascinating insights into the area's past.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for two exceptional
events. Labor Day Weekend is when the park comes alive with the Clothesline Fair, an annual spectacle rich in tradition that's not to be missed. One of the biggest highlights is the square dancing that goes well beyond the daylight hours. Additionally,
every even-numbered year in December, history comes to life with a Civil War
re-enactment, offering a unique and immersive experience for all ages.
